Ratnapura The City of Gems

Ratnapura the city of Gems located 103 km from Colombo is the famous gem-mining town of Sri Lanka. This town is the best town I ever visited while in a Sri Lanka Tours. The name itself explains the nature of the city or Ratnapura means, the City of Gems. Sri Lanka has the greatest concentration of gems on earth and is ranked among the top five gem-bearing nations. One can find all types of gems in Ratnapura from familiar to exotic. These include: white sapphire, yellow sapphire, pink sapphire, orange sapphire, purple sapphire and blue star sapphires, ruby and star ruby, cat’s eye, topaz, amethyst, moonstone, aquamarine, tourmaline, garnet, zircon, spinel, alexandrite, citrine, etc., and the exotic ones such as patite, sinhalite, ekanite, enstatite, andalusite, kornerupine, etc., sought by the connoisseur.

Apart from the gems other places of tourist interests are:

Maha Saman Devale: A “devale” is a shrine dedicated to either a god of the Hindu pantheon or a local deity, which is usually situated within a Buddhist vihara or temple. This unique devale, only a short distance from Ratnapura, is dedicated to “Saman” the tutelary deity of Adam’s Peak. Annual Fair /

Perahara: There is an annual fair and Perahera in the month of July-August, which is among the largest to be held in the country. Its main feature is the Maha Baha a giant effigy who like the Roman Janus has two faces-one pink-cheeked and smiling, the other dour and black-visaged. It was amazing to Know these stuff while in Sri Lanka Tours.

Sinharaja: The highland forest of Singaraja, located near Ratnapura is a nature lover’s delight. It is the last remaining original tract of rain forest on the island. Ratnapura is also one of the base camps to the pilgrimage trek to Adam’s Peak. Visit these places if you are already in Sri Lanka Tours and Ratnapura.

Kandy Perehara

Before starting the description I would like to mention this is the one vent of the year you have to attend if you are on a Tours to Sri Lanka . As the August moon waxes in the Buddhist month of Esala, the streets of Kandy erupt in a ten-day-long pageant which few can match in antiquity, grandeur or barbaric splendor. Young men mortify their flesh while fulfilling vows to the Hindu god of Skanda by walking “in harness” with spikes in their backs, accompanied by a fabulous procession.
The procession includes fire-juggling acrobats, sumptuously-decorated elephants, traditional dancers, oboe-tooting musicians, banners, palanquins, whip crackers, torch bearers and thousands of barefoot pilgrims and swordsmen. To top it off, all this has happened every year since about 300 AD.

The action is made even more mesmerizing because it happens at night. The old cannon booms after dusk and the Perahera (paraders) take to the streets for ten nights, with the parades growing ever longer each night until the final night of pageantry, when the parade is at its finest.

The festival is a synthesis of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs and is dedicated not just to Skanda but also to Buddha. It is held to invoke the blessings of the gods for rain, fertility, successful crops and good health. Elephants feature heavily as they are symbols of abundance and fertility - the “clouds who walk the Earth”, instrumental in attracting the vital rains for harvest time.
The most treasured item in the procession is a copy of a golden reliquary said to hold a tooth of the Buddha. Legend has it that the Buddha’s tooth was brought to Sri Lanka in the third century AD, hidden in the tresses of a princess. Pilgrims flock to visit the golden temple, Sri Dalada Maligawa, situated beside a tree-lined lake, every day of the year to catch a glimpse of the golden casket which holds venerated molar. Your Sri Lanka Tours will be more exciting attending to this event.

Sri Lanka Holidays in Beruwela

‘Powdery sands, towering palms and a heavenly coral-reefed bay - Beruwela is nothing short of beach holiday bliss’. If Sri Lanka has one all-out beach resort, Beruwela is it. Just north of Bentota, it’s a plum spot for serious beach lovers thanks to its dazzling combination of sun, sea and sand. The beaches are something else. Soft golden sand that feels like warm talcum powder, underfoot are marvelous for Sri Lanka Holidays. Giant palm fronds rustling lightly in the tropical breeze are a symbol of Sri Lanka Holidays. All in a breath stopping beautiful corralled bay. Put simply, it’s gorgeous. When you fancy swapping the scenery for a taste of authentic Sri Lankan food, tuck into a spicy prawn korma or scented coconut fish curry at one of the cheap and cheerful cafes edging the sands. Follow it with a sticky rice pudding drizzled in sweet palm treacle. And as a fitting finale, order a glass of the locally made firewater, arrack, fermented from the sap of the coconut palms swaying above you. Delicious, while you’re here takes time to visit Aluthgama. Squeezed between Beruwela and Bentota, this vibrant little town brims with fascinating food, souvenir and sari stalls. It also boasts a lively fish market where fishermen offload the morning’s catch from outrigger canoes. Slightly quieter attractions include the atmospheric Kachimalani Mosque, built where the first Muslim traders arrived on the island in the 11th century. And if you fancy messing about in a boat, take a trip to the picturesque nearby island to climb its lighthouse and wallow in the stunning views. We promise you won’t forget them in a hurry. 56 km. south of Colombo, Beruwela marks the beginning of a 130 km. stretch of beach where resort development has taken immense strides in the past few years. Good bathing may be had in the bay all year round in Sri Lanka Tours .
